Maurice Ravel at 150: Honouring a Master of Colour and Form

2025 marks the 150th anniversary of one of the twentieth century’s most iconic and inventive composers

This year, the global music community celebrates the 150th anniversary of Maurice Ravel (1875–1937) — a composer whose influence on modern music remains as profound today as it was during his lifetime. Known for his vivid orchestrations, refined harmonies, and rhythmic precision, Ravel created a body of work that bridges traditions and innovations, and continues to captivate musicians and audiences around the world.

A Voice of His Time — and Beyond

Ravel’s music emerged during a period of artistic transformation in early twentieth-century Europe. While often associated with Impressionism, Ravel drew inspiration from a wide range of sources — including Neoclassicism, Exoticism, jazz, and music from Spain and the East. His works reflect not just stylistic diversity, but an underlying pursuit of clarity, structure, and emotional restraint.

Among his most celebrated compositions are Daphnis et Chloé, La Valse, Pavane pour une infante défunte, and of course, the ever-hypnotic Boléro, a piece that continues to fascinate with its gradually evolving orchestral power.

Innovation Through Orchestration

Ravel was a master of orchestral colour. His understanding of instrumental texture allowed him to create sound worlds that were both transparent and rich. Whether writing for full symphony orchestra, chamber ensemble, or piano, his music showcases a meticulous ear and a singular sense of expression.

This command of orchestration not only defined his own compositions but also shaped his acclaimed arrangements — most notably his orchestration of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, which remains a concert favourite.

A Global Celebration

In 2025, orchestras, festivals, and institutions across the world will be marking Ravel’s anniversary with special performances, recordings, and tributes. His music — elegant, inventive, and unmistakably his own — continues to resonate with new generations of performers and listeners.

Maurice Ravel’s 150th anniversary is not just a moment to reflect on his legacy, but a chance to experience once again the brilliance, beauty, and modernity of his music.
