Tutor Feature – Serhiy Kudrynetsky

From the Baroque stages of Lviv to the classrooms of London and NYC, Serhiy brings that same spark wherever he goes. A pianist and PhD in musicology, he’s an artist with the ‘Word and Voice’ Theater Centrum and a winner of both national and international competitions. While Baroque music is his greatest love, he also delights in the colour and freedom of jazz.

Beyond the stage, Serhiy is equally passionate about research and collaboration. He co-authored the book Kolomyka in the Space of Ukrainian Culture with Prof. Oleksandr Kozarenko and has worked on many projects with Natalia Polovynka and the ‘Word and Voice’ Theater Centrum. Trained at the Lviv National Music Academy with Prof. Maria Tarnavetska, he now shares this rich mix of scholarship and performance with his students in London and New York City.

Favourite Baroque composer?
All of those born in 1685! Depending on the time of day: Scarlatti, Bach, Handel… and of course Purcell, even though he was born 26 years earlier.

If you could duet with any animal, which would you pick?
Probably a nightingale – though I’m not sure!

Which instrument would you take to a desert island?
Definitely a piano.

Morning routine: scales or coffee?
Coffee ☕️ – in good musical company.

Most overrated musical cliché?
Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.

Go-to karaoke song?
Not really my thing.

Sheet music or free-form improvisation?
Free-form improvisation – I love spontaneity!

Your superpower as a teacher?
Patience and discipline.

One piece of advice for budding musicians:
Schedule your practice. It’s always possible to find 30 minutes a day – small steps every day add up. A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.
