Tutor feature – Christine Obiamalu

Christine Obiamalu grew up in Nigeria before moving to the US at 17 to pursue a Bachelor’s in Music. A proud left-hander, she turned that unique perspective into a creative asset – composing original pieces that blend jazz, Afrobeat, electronic and classical elements into fresh soundscapes. As a music maker, Christine encourages students to experiment across genres and find their own voice in composition and performance.

Beyond her musical life, Christine is a certified yoga instructor – she’s practiced for over a decade and taught classes in New York City for five years. She integrates yoga’s focus on breath, posture and mindfulness into her teaching, helping students build physical comfort at the instrument and mental clarity in practice. Whether guiding a warm-up stretch or refining a phrase, Christine’s holistic approach leaves students feeling grounded, inspired and ready to make music.

  • Favourite Baroque composer?
Johann Sebastian Bach – his fugues never grow old.

  • Animal duet choice?
A songbird – studio-quality harmonies, no soundcheck needed.

  • Guilty-pleasure pop song?
Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” – my shower’s unofficial anthem.

  • Instrument I’d take to a desert island?
A piano – because survival is nicer with chopsticks… for the keys.

  • Morning routine: scales or coffee?
Neither – yoga first, then scales. Coffee’s optional (and I skip it).

  • Most overrated musical cliché?
“You have to suffer for your art.” I prefer creativity fuelled by curiosity, not drama.

  • Go-to karaoke song?
Depends on the hour and my courage – either “If I Ain’t Got You” or “I Wanna Dance With Somebody.”

  • Sheet music or free-form improvisation?
Free-form, with sheet music as a trusty roadmap when I need it.

  • Your superpower as a teacher?
Patience and adaptability – I tailor each lesson like a bespoke suit.

  • One piece of advice for budding musicians?
Stay true to your voice, push boundaries, and never forget to enjoy the ride.
