GAK Temporarily Closes Brighton Store and Takes Website Offline, Sparking Concern Within UK Music Retail Community

The long-established retailer cites “maintenance” as operations pause, but lack of clarity prompts questions about its future

Unexpected Closure Raises Eyebrows

GAK (Guitar, Amp and Keyboard), one of the UK’s most recognized names in musical instrument retail, has temporarily closed its flagship Brighton store and taken its website offline as of Tuesday, March 25. The company has described the closure as being due to “maintenance,” though the lack of prior notice or detailed explanation has led to growing concern among customers and the wider music retail community.

Known for operating seven days a week, GAK’s sudden pause in operations has been especially notable given its longstanding presence in Brighton and its role as one of the country’s top online music retailers.

Limited Communication Fuels Speculation

Reports in the local press, including The Argus, indicate that communication from the company has been minimal. Customers with pending online orders have reportedly received brief notifications referencing “unforeseen circumstances,” with no estimated timeline for resumed service.

Nearby businesses have also expressed confusion, noting the uncharacteristic nature of the closure for a store that has been a local fixture since 1992. GAK’s product listings have been removed from its Reverb store, and the business has been temporarily marked as “permanently closed” on Google Maps — though its social media accounts remain active as of this writing.

A Legacy Brand in Transition?

Founded in 1992 by Gary Marshall, GAK began as a single market stall and gradually expanded into one of the UK’s most influential and accessible music stores. It became an early adopter of mail-order retail and launched its online store in 2002. The company was acquired in 2021 by Ian Stephens and Max McKellar, who expressed ambitions to grow its digital presence and build on its trusted reputation.

At this stage, no official statement has been made regarding the long-term status of GAK. However, the sudden pause in operations listing have prompted concern among loyal customers and industry observers alike.

As the situation develops, the music retail world will be watching closely, hopeful for clarity and continuity from a name that has served UK musicians for over three decades.
