ABRSM Launches New Digital Diplomas in Music Directing

New ARSM, LRSM, and FRSM qualifications now open for booking, offering flexible, accessible recognition for music directors worldwide

The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) has officially opened booking for its new suite of digital diplomas in Music Directing. The ARSM, LRSM, and FRSM qualifications are now available to music directors working in any genre, with any type of ensemble, and from any part of the world.

Flexible, Inclusive, and Fully Online

These qualifications are designed to reflect the broad and evolving landscape of music directing today. Assessments are conducted entirely online, offering candidates a convenient and accessible route to professional recognition.

Once booked, candidates have 28 days to submit their evidence, after which an online discussion with a specially trained diploma examiner is scheduled.

ABRSM’s new directing diplomas place a strong emphasis on flexibility. Candidates may submit written or spoken materials in any language, provided that English translations are included. This approach aims to make the qualifications as inclusive and globally accessible as possible.

Diploma Structure and Requirements

For the ARSM and LRSM in Music Directing, candidates are required to:

  • Submit a video of their directing, accompanied by a supporting commentary
  • Provide a written or spoken submission detailing their approach and context
  • Participate in a live online discussion with an examiner

For the FRSM in Music Directing, candidates can choose one of two assessment routes:

  • Submit a video showing both a rehearsal and a public performance, with commentary
    or
  • Submit an extended research project relevant to their directing practice

As with the other diploma levels, an online discussion follows submission.

Guidance and Resources Available

ABRSM has published detailed qualification specifications, including assessment criteria and submission requirements. Additional resources such as candidate guides, technical submission instructions, and translation policies are also available to help candidates prepare thoroughly.

These new qualifications represent a significant step in formally recognizing the contribution of music directors across educational, community, professional, and stylistically diverse settings.
